Reel Team 6: How 'six' Turned A Bunch Of Actors Into Believable Navy Seals
Teamwork is what makes TV so predictable. Also, how many shows about elite police or military groups can TV support? CBS will air two team shows this season, "Seal Team" and "S.W.A.T." Even placing their premieres on Wednesday and Nov. 2 cannot hide the fact that they are the same show.
Both are action templates, one is about a SWAT team, the other is about a SEAL team. Each one features a He-Man hero. Both shows have an attractive woman in a position of power. And each show features a necessary young newcomer with a rebellious, rule-breaking streak that reminds each hero of his younger self.
That aside, the real difference between the shows is that one does an acceptable job with the cliché-ridden formula and the other doesn't.
Although "Seal Team" wasn't a better show, ratings were boosted by the presence of David Boreanaz ("Bones") as elite Tier One SEAL Team leader Jason Hayes, a by-the-book Lt. Cmdr. Eric Blackburn (Judd Lormond). Hayes is the leader who naturally doesn't follow the rules. Because TV leaders follow the rules and book and do things, it's boring. Max Theriot's young whippersnapper, Clay Spencer, arrives with a chip on his shoulder and Jason is ready at every turn to knock it off.

The pilot episode opens Tony soprano-style, after Hayes' best friend is killed while on a mission. It's part of what SEAL teams deal with, or, in Hayes' case, try to suppress because another mission awaits.
Mandy Ellis (Jessica Pare, "Mad Men"), a CIA analyst, is often involved in calling the shots for the team. The team has the level of diversity required for typical contemporary ensemble act shows, and this includes relationship status. Hayes and his wife, Alana (Michaela Hayes), are taking a break from their marriage, which emphasizes how tough being married to a Navy SEAL can be. Ray Perry (Neil Brown Jr.) is working on his marriage, but his inability to be with his pregnant wife often is still a challenge.
The first two episodes of the show had similar plots. The team is sent on a mission to find, respectively, a long-term American hostage and a group of civilians in need of rescue, ordered to stay the course and follow orders, and disobey.
Creator Benjamin Cavell and his writers pay significant attention to character and dialogue. It may not reach the level of "Homeland," but at least we see the SEAL team and the rest as more than just action figures.

"S.W.A.T," on the other hand, is nothing but action figures, and when the characters talk, they sound stupid, you might as well watch the show without sound.
Hondo Harrelson (Shemar Moore) is promoted to lead his LAPD SWAT team when the team's white leader shoots and kills an unarmed black child. Hondo has been secretly sleeping with his boss Jessica Cortez (Stephanie Sigman), but now that he has to report directly to her, they can't continue their relationship. Or, sigh, can they?
Almost every element of imagination is available, but what we need is a young kind of rebellion to add ginned-up dramatic tension. Cue an unexpectedly hilarious chase scene, where LA cops chase a nutcase on a motorcycle who slides down the street in front of a cop shop, takes off his helmet and tells the cops to leave a ticket at his bicycle because he was late for work.
When you stop laughing, meet Jim Street (Alex Russell), who has to break the rules. Hondo does the same, but with his new job, he has to force them to comply. He's not, of course.
Young Marines In Kabul Were Left To Run Final Days Of Evacuation
The action looks completely fake, like it's happening on a Hollywood set rather than the real streets of Los Angeles.
Moore doesn't make huge strides in the dialogue department, but he looks like a rebel hero. The acting is thin and uninteresting, but as mediocre as the scripts are, the writers would do well not to create three-dimensional characters themselves. Or even two-dimensional, for that matter. Five Of The Best Military Tv Shows To Binge Watch
The World War I miniseries, available on Amazon Prime, follows a group of childhood friends who enlist together in the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps and report their service during the bloody Gallipoli Campaign . Think of it in terms of storytelling and character development
Now, many of you are probably familiar with HBO's classic World War II, but if not, here's a not-so-subtle hint that you should take the time to watch it.
Created by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, the award-winning series is available on HBO and follows the men of "Easy" Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, as they land in Normandy and go through France. Survive the Battle of the Bulge and end the war by drinking Hitler's wine from the top of the Eagle's Nest in Germany.
One of the series' greatest strengths — one of its many successes — is that it sticks tightly to a core group of characters throughout the war, with each episode told from the perspective of a different member of the company. In doing so, the show offers a true look at what the war in Europe was like for the men who fought it.
